In a historic moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's pioneering underwater Metro line in Kolkata on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation infrastructure. The newly unveiled Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, boasting the country's first transportation tunnel beneath a river, snakes its way beneath the iconic Hooghly River.
A Marvel Under the River: Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Underwater Metro Line
The new Metro line goes deep under the Hooghly River, making it the first in India to have a tunnel beneath a river. The deepest Metro station in the country is now at Howrah.
To celebrate this achievement, PM Modi took a ride from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan with school students.
Apart from Kolkata, PM Modi also virtually opened new Metro services in other parts of the country.
Kolkata Metro has come a long way. From only 27.99 km in 1984 to 52.33 km by 2014, and then a big leap to 77.67 km by 2023.
Last year was a record-breaker, with the Metro network expanding by a whopping 14.23 km in just one year.
Right now, Kolkata's Metro covers around 47.93 km, split into different routes.
A fresh 5.4 km stretch from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay was opened, costing Rs 1,435 crore. It's expected to make travel easier and less crowded.
A 4.8 km stretch from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade is not just any Metro line; it's the first one to go under a river. When complete, it will link two big railway stations at Howrah and Sealdah.
Another 1.25 km extension from Taratala to Majerhat was inaugurated, aiming to help South Kolkata commuters and ease traffic.
The new underwater Metro in Kolkata is a game-changer. It's not just a tunnel; it's a link connecting Kolkata's past and future, promising easier and faster travel for everyone. Prime Minister Modi's vision is turning into reality, making Kolkata's transportation smarter and more connected.
