EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR SHAYLA JONES

Can you tell us about your journey from studying music performance to becoming an inspirational author and entrepreneur?

Well, being a musician naturally creates entrepreneurial opportunities, and I've been one my whole life. Looking back, I realized that being a musician taught me how to run a business—me being the business. Through my experiences as an entrepreneur and in life, I’ve learned valuable lessons that helped me move past stagnation. I decided to share those lessons with others, hoping to make their journey a bit easier, even if it’s just for one person. Becoming an author wasn’t planned; it just happened, and this journey has been so different from what I expected, but I’m grateful for it all.

What inspired you to write I'm Stuck, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?

I was in a phase of being stuck, unsure of what I wanted in life or how to get there. Despite having ideas, I struggled to pursue anything. I prayed for guidance, and God told me to write about the place I was in. I hope readers realize the importance of self-assessment during stagnant times and the need to make necessary adjustments before moving forward. Not getting the answer you want doesn’t mean your prayers haven’t been answered—sometimes, you have to do the work to reach your destination. How do you balance your multiple roles as an author, keynote speaker, musician, content creator, and entrepreneur?

It is definitely not easy, especially right now. Here I am in the middle of different businesses, and I’ve been dealing with sickness and death within my family at the same time. It is definitely a trying time; however, I believe that you can conquer anything that life has handed to you. It’s up to you to realize the strength that you carry. Even when I’m not strong, God’s strength has been my best friend.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your life that significantly influenced your career path?

Towards the end of college, the pandemic occurred. I lost my cousin and my aunt at the same time due to COVID. During that time, I started to see life differently. My viewpoint on jobs and their salaries shifted, especially after getting a degree and having difficulties making a good salary. I’ve always kind of been in my own lane, so after their passing, I saw other people on social media doing their thing, and they were successful. Even though I didn’t know them personally, it verified the many possibilities, and I started working towards it.

How has your background in psychology influenced your writing and speaking engagements?

That’s an interesting question. I think that I love psychology because, for one, I love helping people. I’m a people person. So many of my family and friends really think I don’t get shy, but I do; I just push past it. So I think psychology can provide more understanding and less judgment, which makes me more relatable and easier to bond with. I also think psychology, along with my interpersonal skills, can give comfortability in communicating.

What challenges did you face while launching your clothing line, Greater Image, and how did you overcome them?

IWhew, several. I almost didn’t launch due to everything happening, but I believe in keeping my word. One challenge was graphics, and now it's reaching the target audience. We believe in what we wear, not just for popularity but for its meaning. Since we launched recently, I know it takes time. No matter the challenges, it's not about me—it's for those who need encouragement. Some lack a belief system, and our job is to provide that push. Helping others means you'll never lack.

Can you describe the concept and goals behind your show In the Zone?

Ahh, yes! You know I’m a musician, and though I don’t gig as much, my passion for music remains. In the Zone lets me stay connected to music on a broader level. I react to videos people recommend, and sometimes I get to interview the artists. It's all done in one take, so it’s honest and interesting. Our goal is to highlight these amazing talents and their often-overlooked musicality.

What advice would you give to individuals who feel stuck and are struggling to find their purpose?

I would take a moment to reflect on my situation and see if I’m progressing toward my goals. I’d pray for discernment and guidance. Even before feeling stuck, I prayed for discernment, thinking my prayers weren’t always answered. When I felt stuck, I realized how much my discernment had grown, helping me stay goal-driven and find my purpose.

As a multi-instrumentalist, how do you incorporate music into your work and daily life?

Music is definitely key for me in all aspects. Music is therapeutic as well; music is just as important as television and social media. If you listen to music that’s negative, then your mindset will typically be negative, and vice versa. When I’m going through, I have certain songs that I will repeat to help me get through. I’m not picky when it comes to genres—as long as it’s good music, then I’m supportive—but I have to listen to something daily. I also have released music, and I have several family members who are artists as well, so I play their music too.
