The death of Yahya Sinwar, who had long been at the top of Israel's most-wanted list, marks a critical moment in the conflict in Gaza. Israel had accused Sinwar of orchestrating the unprecedented attacks on 7 October 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths in Israel and 251 people being taken hostage.
Sinwar assumed leadership of Hamas following the death of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran in July. Before that, he had served as the leader of the group within the Gaza Strip.
Hamas has yet to confirm or comment on his death. However, Israel claims to have confirmed Sinwar’s identity through dental records and fingerprints from his over two decades in Israeli prisons, matching them to a body found in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
